01 Upgrade of Baxian Pagoda and surrounding views to be completed this month

Baxian Pagoda

As our journalist noticed yesterday, the upgrade project of Baxian Pagoda, a tourist spot in Baxianshan Park of Jinjiang, and its periphery is under way. It’s expected to be open to citizens in part with its new scenic views before the National Day holiday. At the end of this year, the completed tourist attraction will be fully open to the public.

The upgrade project of the periphery of Baxian Pagoda includes a lake, a square, a surrounding walk, a lakeside pathway, and a fire lane. The fire lane is going to serve as a new road to Baxianshan Park. The project covers 35,000 square meters, with the lake area expanded to 10,000 squares meters, that is, 4,000 square meters bigger than before.
Baxian Pagoda, a building of ancient Minnan (Southern Fujian) style, shows itself behind woods at the end of the new winding path of Baxianshan Park.

The scaffolding of Baxian Pagoda from the 2nd to the 5th floor has been removed. The tower with red brick roofs, taupe walls and white ridges looks stately. A 6-meter golden tower top against the blue sky is the whole pagoda's stroke of genius.

“Up to now, the exterior decoration of Baxian Pagoda from its 2nd to 5th floor has been finished. And the interior decoration is also in process. So is the construction of the first floor of the pagoda and its outdoor corridor. it’s expected to be open at the end of this year,” said an official of Jinjinag Forestry and Gardening Bureau. The construction of Baxian pagoda combines modern technology and ancient Minnan architecture style. Its design as well as construction is unique and the first of its kind in China, even in Southeast Asian.

After the completion of Baxian Pagoda, Jinjiang Forestry and Gardening Bureau will undertake the upgrade program of its surrounding lake, square, roads and greening.

Using forklift trucks on the spot, workers are clearing and consolidating the roadbed. A 400-meter walk surrounding the pagoda hides itself in the woods. Taking a walk on this path brings an all-round view of Baxian Pagoda.

At the end of the walk lies a square in front of the pagoda. The square is almost completed. Four stone sculptures are being carved as designed. Right in front of the tower is Baxian Lake. After being upgraded, the area of this lake will be 1/3 larger than before. The whole pagoda can be reflected on water when the lake is full.

The official also told our journalist that the upgrade project enlarges the coverage of the lake and the square, and improves the surrounding walk, paths and woods. Then, Baxian Pagoda together with its picturesque surroundings of wide enough spaces will become a popular tourist attraction for people and make a new landmark of Jinjiang.

02 Fuzhou University's Jinjiang Science and Education Park Welcomes Second Batch of Students This Fall

Body temperature test, baggage sterilization, identity verification, mask replacement...On September 12th, 294 new postgraduate students of the Advanced Manufacturing Institute of Fuzhou University’s Jinjiang Science and Education Park successively arrived at the university for registration.

At 9:00 a.m., at the east gate of Fuzhou University’s Jinjiang Science and Education Park, teachers from the university's novel coronavirus prevention and control command office and student volunteers have been busy welcoming the new graduate students. There are passageways with temperature measuring equipment ready on site. "This year, we divide the homecoming students into three batches. The first batch of 240 sophomores of Ocean Academy have been attending classes. Today comes the second batch, and there will be another batch of 210 freshmen from Ocean Academy arriving on September 20th," said Lan Rongsong, deputy director of the Management Committee of Fuzhou University’s Jinjiang Science and Education Park.

In order to do a better job of epidemic prevention and control, the university has set up pick-up points at both Jinjiang International Airport and Jinjiang Railway Station, and has arranged six buses to pick up the students. The students who come to check in are required to report their daily health conditions 14 days in advance through the Fuzhou University electronic health code system and only those who have reported for 14 consecutive days will be able to obtain a green code and be allowed to enter the university. For the parents who drive their children over, they will have to stop at the university entrance and are not allowed to enter the campus.

According to the university authority, once students are admitted to the university, the campus will be under closed management and they will not be allowed out unless necessary. "In places where people gather, masks are required." Lan Rongsong introduced that the university has also developed a special implementation plan for emergency response, and quarantine rooms have been set up in dormitories, classrooms, libraries, teachers' apartments and medical offices for faculty and students who suddenly develop symptoms such as fever, fatigue and dry cough.

"The campus is big and beautiful, and I'm sure the children will be very happy to study here." Lin Jianwei, who drove his child from Longyan to the university along with his wife, expressed their understanding of not being able to accompany their children into the campus because of the epidemic. "It's all for the good of the children. Knowing the teachers are so strict about their management work, we are much more at ease now."

At 11 o'clock, in the student dormitory, Huang Yusen from Neijiang, Sichuan province, has just made his bed. It is the first time he has taken the 13-hour high-speed train ride, and it is also his first time in Jinjiang. "It's so bright and beautiful here. The campus environment and dormitory conditions are great." Huang Yusen said with a smile, “the university's epidemic prevention and control work is very strict and the schoolmates are very welcoming. I believe I’ll have a very good time living and studying here.

03 Main Tower of Quanzhou Bay Cross-sea Bridge along Fuzhou-Xiamen Railway Capped

At twelve noon of September 15th started the cast concrete work at the 160-meter-high top of the main south tower of the Quanzhou Bay Cross-sea Bridge, an integral part of the Fuzhou-Xiamen railway and the first cross-sea high-speed railway bridge in China. The cast concrete work was completed in three hours, which symbolizes the main tower is capped and means the whole construction moves to the fast lane.

This newly built Fuzhou-Xiamen high-speed railway is the first cross-sea high-speed railway in China. It goes along the coastal area of Fujian province from Fuzhou to Xiamen and Zhangzhou, with a length of 277.42 km and a designed speed of 350 km per hour.

As the main control project, Quanzhou Bay Bridge is 20.287 km long, connecting Jinjiang' Xintang with Huian. The structure over the sea is 8.96 km in length, and the main bridge that crosses Quanzhou Bay is 800 meters long, with a main span of 400 meters.

The bridge is shaped like an H, with south and north major towers as high as 160.254 meters, equivalent to the height of a 50-storey building. Each giant tower consumes 11,230.65 cubic meters of concrete.

According to Liu Fuxing, the administrative assistant manager of Fuzhou-Xiamen high-speed railway project of the Second Harbor Engineering Company, both main towers were constructed with hydraulic self-climbing formwork, which was divided into 28 sections. And to fit the curve design of the tower, every time the formwork crawled up one section, the specifications should be precisely adjusted. This caused great difficulty for the quality management on site. To overcome that, they made full use of intelligent measures to create models and calculate the specifications for each section.

When completed, the high-speed railway will cut the trip between Fuzhou and Xiamen to less than one hour, which not only has great significance to the development of the cities along the west coast of Taiwan Straits, but shortens the time it takes to travel from Jinjiang to the two above-mentioned cities. Besides, as an extension of the Beijing-Fuzhou railway, it enables six cities in Fujian province to gain “high-speed” access to Beijing, which is very important for Fujian to be integrated into the country’s high-speed railway network.
