  Foreigners in jinjiang

  Sushank, an Indian post-doctor:

As the first foreign post-doctor introduced to Jinjiang, Sushank, 30 years old this year, has been working and living in Jinjiang for more than a year. He says directly that the life in Jinjiang is very satisfactory and interesting. In March, 2018, Sushank came to Quanzhou Equipment Manufacturing Institute of CAS Haixi Institute, located in Sanchuang Park, Jijiang, and started his research into the technology of Infinite Internet of Things. During his doctoral study in Northern University of Malaysia, he had published over 20 papers in some international academic journals, and had been invited to give lectures in many universities.

Yesterday after work, Sushank finished his job and walked to the dining hall for dinner. His apartment is on the upper floor of the dining hall building with an elevator, and he just has to pay a small amount of money for the water and electricity bills. The comfortable working environment, convenient traffic and friendly colleagues, all make Sushank blend into the local life in Jinjiang soon.

In his spare time, Sushank usually cooks and has some drinks with his colleagues on weekends. Once at a birthday party of his colleague, Sushank drank like the locals did. "In India, we would have some dishes before drinking. But on that day, I drank two cups of Chinese liquor with an empty stomach and felt dizzy soon." Sushank recalls happily. He even tried a finger-guessing game in Minnan style.

To blend in Jinjiang better, Sushan actively took part in various traditional festival celebration activities such as "snatching duck on the water" on Dragon Boat Festival, "mooncake gambling" on Mid-autumn Day, and making dumplings on Lantern Festival. Sushank says, "Both China and India have a long history. India has a lot of festivals, and so does Jijiang. This reminds me of my hometown." As long as he has time, he would like to participate in every event, because he believes that every city has its unique culture, and only by experiencing it himself, can he better understand the city.

In the meantime, Sushank is one of the teachers in the English corner. He has made a lot of local friends in the English corner, which is held 2 or 3 times a month. "Joining in the English corner gives us a chance to communicate with the local people, and thus to understand the local culture and customs", Sushank says,"Although I am a post-doctor, it doesn't mean that I know everything. Learning is a lifetime process, and I have learned a lot from the local people."

When asked about his impression on Jijiang, Sushank says frankly that he has been to a lot of cities in China, such as Beijing, Shenzhen, Hongkong and Macao, but they all seem to be crowded and traffic there is notoriously bad. But Jijiang is quite different. The scenery here is beautiful, traffic is convenient, and the people are friendly.

Till now, there is only one year left for his contract, but he says that if there is a chance, he hopes to stay in Jinjiang to do more research and teach in the institute.
