Everyone is a master; everyone is a volunteer. Large-scale sports events are important opportunities to show the image of a city, and every citizen is just one representative of the city. Since Jinjiang won the right to host Gymnasiade, Jinjiang people have actively participated in kinds of preparation and continuously improved their own quality to welcome visitors from all over the world with the best appearance, hoping that international friends will fully feel good etiquette and civilization of the city

01 A grand gathering with joint effort

In February of this year, Jinjiang Municipal Party Committee launched Daily English about Gymnasiade on the WeChat Public, and anchors read and demonstrate some common English sentences or dialogues that are selected earnestly every day.

It was late at night, and Chen Sudan, who majors in translation at School of Foreign Languages of Huaqiao University, didn't take a break. She was reading English seriously on the device. If making a mistake, she would start over and record again and again. “I am looking forward to the arrival of Gymnasiade, and hope to use my expertise to build a bridge of friendship between Jinjiang and the world.” She is  the anchor of Daily English.

To welcome Gymnasiade, there are many participants like Chen Sudan in Jinjiang.

“Children, do you know what Gymnasiade is?” In Jinjiang No. 3 Experimental Kindergarten, Teacher Yang Danni was eloquently explaining the knowledge of Gymnasiade to the children in the class. As a kindergarten teacher, Yang Danni always pays close attention to Gymnasiade since Jinjiang bid to host Gymnasiade. “Gymnasiade is closely related to every Jinjiang citizen. Learning from the subtleties, children can influence the whole family to participate in Gymnasiade."

Zhang Miaomiao is a director of Jinjiang International Talent Exchange Association. She once worked in External Relations Department of the Executive Committee Office of Gymnasiade, in charge of translation and reception and so on. Although the work is trivial and arduous, Zhang Miaomiao is very happy, “This job makes me jump out of my comfort zone, expand my circle and perspective, and understand the principles of lifelong learning.”

According to investigation, two years ago, Jinjiang International Talent Exchange Association was established as a result of Gymnasiade. International talent elites from 32 countries and more than 30 industries have joined in the association to gather strength to serve Gymnasiade.

02 A glamorous city with volunteer service

About 5,200 event volunteers and 10,000 city volunteers will be recruited, trained, then be in service for the Gymnasiade 2020. Volunteer service both inside and outside the sports fields would be a great way to show the glamour of the city.

Peng Wei, Deputy Secretary of the Youth League Committee, Jinjiang Huaqiao Junior Middle School, introduced that they were responsible for the recruitment of professional volunteers for sports events, foreign reception, tourism interpretation, serving etiquette, and so on. Students are so enthusiastic that positions of the first batch were all filled within quite a short time.

Since more than half of the Gymnasiade events are to be held in campuses, middle school students will also be recruited as event volunteers, so that they can be actually involved the feast of youth.

The Archery Contest of Gymnasiade is going to be held in Jiyan Middle School. Huang Zhirong, student from Jiyan Middle School, felt so proud that he does not only ask his cousin, who has studied abroad, for advice over oral English, but also takes the initiative to learn foreign cultures. “We should develop the awareness of being the host. Only by showing respect to different cultures can we have better communication and interaction with distant guests”, he said.

Chen Congyi from Anhai County, has been in volunteer service since 2012. In her view, English has been an important tool for communication due to the increasing number of foreigners arrived and international contests held in Jinjiang.

Born in 1970s, Chen joked that she is rather poor in English. It is no easy for people of her age to learn a foreign language, but she believes continuous learning guarantees progress. She does not only collect useful articles and make reviews from time to time, but also shares them with other volunteers to improve all together.

03 An international city with overall quality elevation

Last month, an H5 entitled “Welcome the Gymnasiade with etiquette and propriety” took over the moments of Jinjiang people, being forwarded by around 280,000 people within 10 days. “To be a civilized audience with proper words and behaviors. ” -- words at the end of the H5 have disclosed the resolution of Jinjiang people.

As part of the activity “Jinjiang Being the Host”, which is intended for the overall quality elevation of Jinjiang citizens, series of H5 centering around the topics like hygiene, volunteers, environmental protection, etiquette and civilization, have been produced in joint effort of Jinjiang New Era Civilization Practice Center and the Civilization Office of Jinjiang City, drawing great attention from the public.

According to Wu Wenbo, Chief of the Moral Construction Section, Civilization Office of Jinjiang City, the overall quality elevation of citizens is an inherent and imperceptible long process of transformation. It needs both the autonomy and heteronomy. Therefore, each citizen is obligated to be the participant, practitioner, and transmitter of civilization.

Zheng Qiaojing, advanced etiquette instructor with CVCC, was invited last year, to give etiquette training for event volunteers, especially the etiquette in reception. In the same year, she started a challenge online named “Learning Etiquette for Gymnasiade”. For 100 days, she kept sharing knowledge of etiquette every day, giving excellent illustration of proper way in dressing, social intercourse, foreign reception, etc. and received favorable feedback.

“Beside the etiquette in general”, Zheng claims, “the volunteer training for big sports events also needs to include reception, sports etiquette, and other specific modules. As an expert in etiquette training, she took the Gymnasiade as a good chance to improve both the understanding of etiquette and the image of Jinjiang as an international city.
